A Casual Dinner Party

The Peonies Arrival

The night before Thanksgiving is a great time to host a party for close friends and their children that have returned from college for the big holiday weekend. It’s a kick-off to the holiday season and gives the college students and their families a chance to socialize before going off to their own separate family events.

I always start my holiday parties with a theme and this year it was unusual and oversized gourds, and loads of magnolia leaves and branches. As the dinner was to be a buffet, I rented an orange linen tablecloth to the floor for the dining room table. I then placed the four giant gourds running down the center of the table along with four tall silver candlesticks, groups of votives, and two silver pheasants with whimsical orange bows tied around their necks.

I then pinned a garland of magnolia leaves around the edge of the table, creating a border of lush brown and green foliage.

Greeting the guests around the front door was another magnolia garland adorned with pomegranates and the two large French urns inside the door were arranged abundantly with magnolia branches.

After a festive dinner of pheasant chili, macaroni and cheese, honey baked ham and biscuits, each returning college student took home a chocolate turkey with a name tag flagging the name of their college. Everyone left in fine spirits looking forward to the big turkey dinner approaching.
