At Hidden Pond Farm spring cleaning starts in January, but rather than reorganizing the attic, or sweeping out the garage, it is the time when we evaluate what items and areas in the house need repair.

The perfect time to appraise the “state of the house” and take action during the winter months is after all the holiday entertaining season, this way you can be ready for next year and time won’t sneak up.

Try to make a checklist of the items that were used during the holidays and inspect them carefully. Are there chips in the fine stemware? Do the silver trays need re silvering? Has the furniture been scratched or spotted? Does any woodwork in the house need painting? Is there any wallpaper that needs to be changed?

I also do an inventory of the linens and place orders of what needs replacement or refreshing. I examine linen napkins and towels, and remove what has seen too much wear, or have any stains that can’t be removed. I go through the everyday silver flatware to make sure we haven’t lost any teaspoons over the year and I reorder those that have disappeared.

As you put away your holiday decoration, you might want to take a second and check if these pieces have seen one to many holiday season and need to be repaired. As you might have read in December’s View From Hidden Pond, this year I displayed my grown children’s Steiff stuffed toy collection for a children’s hot chocolate party in the garden house, where a few of the animals suffered minor injuries and were missing ears and tails, so off they went to the doll hospital for mending.
